Many populations previously identified as M. bistriata have since been identified as M. mabouya (in the Caribbean) or M. nigropunctata (South America).
It may also be considered a synonym with the closely related M. mabouya, which is found in the Caribbean.
Most reptiles exhibit strict epitheliochorial placentation (e.g. Pseudemoia entrecasteauxii) however at least two examples of endotheliochorial placentation have been identified (Mabuya sp. and Trachylepis ivensi).
