The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) extended a spur track from its Richmond-Newport News main line tracks to the site from nearby Williamsburg and established Magruder Station near the former unincorporated town of Magruder.

In April 1862 Magruder's army was incorporated into the right wing of the larger army of Joseph E. Johnston, preparing defenses against an expected attack by George B. McClellan in what would become the Peninsula Campaign.
A three-hour truce was called for by Magruder, but Union Fleet Commander William B. Renshaw, ignoring the negotiation offer, attempted to destroy the grounded Westfield with explosives rather than let it fall into enemy hands.
During the New Deal administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Magruder served as General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board from 1934 to 1935 and as General Counsel of the Wage and Hour Division of the United States Department of Labor from 1938 to 1939.
In 2010, Magruder was listed in Newsweek magazine as the 481st highest-rated school in the country.
