Early on Panikkar had cultivated an interest in Malayalam literature, and was a lifelong friend of the poet Vallathol.
He won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award twice: in 1972 for the play Pralayam and in 2010 for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature.

Poonthottam Achhan Nambudiri (also known as Poonthottam Parameshwaran Nambudiri) was a 19th-century poet of the Venmani School of Malayalam Literature.
Its early contributors included prominent personalities in Malayalam literature such as MT Vasudevan Nair, Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, N. P. Mohammed, C. Radhakrishnan and artists such as BM Gafoor, Yesudasan, Paul Kallanode and Venu.
She is the daughter of the famous Malayalam writer and former IAS officer N. S. Madhavan who is one of the most powerful voice of Malayalam literature.
