This unrest was provoked by the arrest of Mohamed Nasheed - an open critic of the president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom - and the subsequent demolition of the Dhunfini tent, used by the members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for their gatherings.
After the multi-party system started functioning in the Maldives, Mahir became a supporter of Maldivian Democratic Party and is an outspoken critic of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
However, when the election date was announced in early October, GIP formed a coalition with the Maldivian Democratic Party, after being approached by the two other main opposition groups: the New Maldives Movement and the Jumhooree Party.
