In this year, with the vacancy rate at 20% and chronically vacant properties beginning to deteriorate, Marcus Westbury created the Renew Newcastle initiative to activate empty shop fronts in and around the Hunter Street Mall.
In 2000 he co-founded, with Sebastian Chan and Marcus Westbury, the Sound Summit, an independent electronic record labels conference in Newcastle, as part of the annual This Is Not Art Festival.
It was founded in 2000 by Sebastian Chan, Kenny Sabir and Marcus Westbury and evolved in part from the involvement of musicians in the Electrofringe festival that took place in Newcastle at that time.
