As an infant he showed early musical promise, and studied piano under Marguerite Long.
In 1943 she and violinist Jacques Thibaud established the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Competition for violinists and pianists, which takes place each year in Paris.

At age 19 he went to Paris to study under Marguerite Long, and the following year he won 3rd Prize in the Long-Thibaud Competition.
There, he received awards that gave him the opportunity to continue his studies in Paris, where he worked with Jacques Fèvrier, Robert Casadesus, Magda Tagliaferro, and Marguerite Long, among others.
During her conservatory years she won prizes in the prestigious Enescu, Marguerite Long–Jacques Thibaud and Queen Elizabeth international piano competitions in Bucharest, Paris and Brussels.
After leaving the academy he studied privately in Paris with Marguerite Long, while also taking an external BMus degree from Durham University.
In 1969, she won the second grand prize in the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris (nobody won the first one) as well as the special prize of Rainier III, Prince of Monaco.
