Later in 2004 the family was formally defined as a node-based taxon including Candidodon itapecuruense and Mariliasuchus amarali.
Comahuesuchus seems instead to be more closely related to Mariliasuchus.
A pre-historic crocodile, Mariliasuchus amarali, was found in Marilia and its name was a tribute to the city.
