He received an A.B. (summa) from Harvard in 1988, studying under Benjamin M. Friedman, and went on to study at the London School of Economics (MSc. in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics) where he was a recipient of a Marshall Scholarship.
She currently advises students applying to distinguished fellowships including the Marshall Scholarship, Gates Scholarship, Rhodes Scholarship and Harry S. Truman Scholarship.
In 1997 he won the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, and in 1998 he was named to the USA Today Academic All-Star Team and won the Marshall Scholarship for study at the University of Oxford.
Shermain attended the St. John's Catholic Primary, the Christ the King High School, and the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and became the recipient of the Thrugood Marshall Scholarship for academic excellence and the Student Service Award for excellence in Service on campus and in the community.
