The churchyard contains an ancient Yew tree which is estimated to be 1300 years old, documents in the church state the men of Martindale, who were famous as bowmen used the tree and others in the district to replenish their arms.
Dr. Hubbell is also a senior staff scientist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Balboa, Panama.
Anybody approaching from the north will see 'The Bungalow' in Martindale which was formerly a shooting lodge built in 1910 by the Earl of Lonsdale for the visiting Kaiser Wilhelm and is now a holiday cottage available to rent.
Local schools are Micklem and formerly Martindale primary schools (closed 2008), and the John F Kennedy Catholic School.
