In ancient times it was known as Mets Kznut, but from 1830-1922 it was called Nerkin Gharanlugh and in 1926 it was changed to Martuni in honor of the first Soviet premier of Armenia, Aleksandr Myasnikyan, whose nom de guerre was "Martuni".

Nado Makhmudov

Nado Makhmudov was born on January 1, 1907, in the village of Gharanlugh, now Martuni, in Armenia.

Nairi Stadium

With a capacity of 6,800 spectators, Nairi Stadium is the home ground of Alashkert FC (based in Martuni) of the Armenian Premier League.


Martuni Province

In 1991 the parliament of Azerbaijan abolished Martuni province, incorporating its territory into the neighbouring Azerbaijani rayon of Khojavend.
