Gorton Locomotive Works, known locally as Gorton Tank was located in Openshaw near Manchester, England and was completed in 1848 by the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway.
In 1841 I. W. Boulton began an apprenticeship with the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway under Richard Peacock.

Besides Woodhead, there were short tunnels at Audenshaw Road, Hattersley (two), Thurgoland and Bridgehouses.

In 1947, when they organized a centennial commemorative journey for the original Mormon trek to Salt Lake City, Wendell J. Ashton was the national president.
As director of LDS Public Affairs, Ashton dealt with the issue of the Howard Hughes "Mormon Will".
