Syed Omar was a philanthropist and his charitable acts included donating a large plot of land in Victoria Street for the purposes of a Muslim burial ground, the construction of a mosque in Bencoolen Street and Masjid Kampong Melaka, renamed Masjid Omar Kampong Melaka in his honour.

21 November – After false radio reports from the Ayatollah Khomeini that the Americans have occupied the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the United States Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan is attacked by a mob and set afire, killing 4.
Today, it remains the second largest mosque in Pakistan and South Asia and the fifth largest mosque in the world after the Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) of Mecca, the Al-Masjid al-Nabawi (Prophet's Mosque) in Medina, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca and the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad.
An 1856 painting by Percy Carpenter, entitled Telok Ayer Street as seen from Mount Wallich, features an early visual record of the brick mosque.
Under the supervision of former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, it was constructed in 1976 for the visit of Libya's President Muammar al-Gaddafi, although his visit was cancelled.
The name is derived from the Arabic word, مودة which literally means affectionate; given by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore(MUIS).
