The house was designed and built in 1948-1949 by Henry F. Miller as a thesis project for a Master of Architecture at the Yale School of Architecture.

Freeman had a BA from Columbia College, a Bachelor of Architecture from Columbia University, a Master of Architecture from Columbia, and a Diploma of Art and Archaeology from the Sorbonne in Paris.
After attending Ottawa Hills High School and playing on its state high school championship winning basketball team, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Architecture & Urban Planning and a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Graduating from Yale in 1975, he pursued his Master of Architecture degree at the University of Pennsylvania, studying with Allan Greenberg, Robert A.M. Stern, David Van Zanten, and Steven Izenour.
He received his Master of Architecture and Urban Design (MAUD) with distinction from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1991.
