In 1993 President Carlos Menem's Secretary of Environment María Julia Alsogaray presented a 3-year project to clean up the Riachuelo that was approved, but never started, let alone concluded.
The station takes its name from the nearby bridge of Puente Alsina over the Riachuelo River.

The Puente Alsina, is a neo colonial bridge inaugurated on 1938, that joins the neighbourhood of Nueva Pompeya in the Argentine capital (Buenos Aires) with the city of Valentín Alsina (District of Lanús, Gran Buenos Aires), crossing over the Riachuelo.
