Through Ruth Nellie Drake he had two grandsons, mathematician Alfred Willcox who served as the executive director of the Mathematical Association of America and United Church of Christ minister Brewster Willcox and a granddaughter, Barbara Willcox Schott.
The MAA sponsors numerous competitions for students, including the William Lowell Putnam exam for undergraduate students, and the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) for middle- and high-school students.

In 1993, Bailey received the Sidney Fernbach award from the IEEE Computer Society, as well as the Chauvenet Prize and the Hasse Prize from the Mathematical Association of America.
He is a two-time winner of the Mathematical Association of America's Lester R. Ford Award for expository writing, in 1991 for his paper "Random intervals" with Joyce Justicz and Peter Winkler, and in 2001 for his paper "When Close is Close Enough".
In 2005, Halmos and his wife Virginia funded the Euler Book Prize, an annual award given by the Mathematical Association of America for a book that is likely to improve the view of mathematics among the public.
