Matsumoku began in Matsumoto, Japan, as a family owned woodworking business that specialized in building tansu and butsudan.

Shortly after the World War II (1939-1945), the Singer Corporation established the Singer Sewing Machine Company, Japan, and set up production facilities in Nagoya.
Note: similar model but with slightly broaden left-horn, seems later also manufactured by Matsumoku and exported as: Palmer, Tempo, Nivco (JVC), etc.
