On 25 November Vendola won 15.6% of the vote and came third behind Democrats Pier Luigi Bersani (44.9%) and Matteo Renzi (35.5%).
On 9 June 2009, Renzi, by now a member of the Democratic Party, won the mayoral election with 47.6% of the vote, compared to 32% for Giovanni Galli.
