Known since 1700 AD, Matunga was a cluster of villages, which later on were brought under a single governing umbrella by the ruling British.
Matunga houses the Institute of Chemical Technology (erstwhile University Department of Chemical Technology), Guru Nanak Khalsa College, R.A. Podar College, South Indian Education Society's College, Ramnarain Ruia College are some of higher education institutions located in Matunga, which are accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NACC).
Ruia College is located in the central part of Mumbai close to Hindu colony, between the Dadar and Matunga railway stations.
