On 27 December 1935, the Mauna Loa volcano on the island of Hawaii erupted, threatening the city of Hilo.

Its 3,718-metre (12,198 ft)-high summit is the highest point in Spain, the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic, and it is the third highest volcano in the world measured from its base on the ocean floor, after Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea located in Hawaii.
A third significant group is Mauna Loa tunings, in which the highest pair of strings are a fifth apart: Gabby Pahinui often played in C Mauna Loa, CGEGAE.
A number of cultivars, many of hybrid origin, are commercially available, such as the larger hybrids "Mauna Loa”, named after the Hawaiian volcano, and the even larger “Sensation”, which are both popular indoor plants. "Domino" is a finely variegated variety of intermediate size.

It consists of Hakalau Forest on the windward side of Mauna Kea and Kona Forest on the western side of Mauna Loa.
The species was discovered in May 1993, by Dennis Desjardins, in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Puʻu Makaʻala, on the eastern flank of Mauna Loa, and collected later at the same location.
