The weapon was in appearance similar to the Maxim gun, but came with two barrels, capable of working in conjunction or separately with a discharge of 500 rpm.

It used pan magazines containing 104 rounds, instead of the belt feed of the Maxim gun which was prone to jamming.
Initially they developed a simple adaptation of the Maxim action (itself widely used in Germany in the MG 08), driven by a crank from the engine.

Authorized on 21 March 1898 and commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Dixon Byron Evans of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, the force consisted of 5 Staff, 16 Royal Canadian Dragoons, 49 men of the Royal Canadian Artillery and 133 men of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Infantry armed with Lee-Enfield .303 rifles, two Maxim guns and two bronze seven-pounder cannons.

Budenovka became part of history as Red Army cavalry men wearing budennovkas became an iconic cultural image from the Russian civil war, together with tachankas, the Nagant revolver or Mauser C96, Maxim gun and rebelling sailors with ammo belts slung over their chests.
