In 2005 the Indian Navy ordered six Scorpène class; all the Indian boats will be built in India, at Mazagon Dock and elsewhere, and the last two are to be fitted with the indigenous AIP module.

According to the Indian Minister of Defence A. K. Antony, negotiations for the contract of the seven stealth frigates are ongoing, four of which will be constructed by Mazagon Dock Ltd in Mumbai and three by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata.
