Mrs. McCaffery sent him to England to stay with a friend, Mrs. Murphy of Mossley near Manchester, where, at the age of 12, he started work in the mill.

The sentence was carried out on Saturday, 11 January 1862, in front of Kirkdale Gaol, at Liverpool.

McCafferty went on to play for Southern League clubs Portsmouth and Brentford between further spells at Bathgate.
Before her election to parliament, McCafferty was a member of Hebden Royd Town Council 1991–95.
In October 2004 McCafferty's sold the combined business to ANZ Bank and George Chapman with both operations were rebranded as Greyhound Australia.
Then in 1948, McCafferty was invited to coach Team USA at the Central American Olympic Games in Panama, and he led the U.S. to a gold medal.
On 10 December 2008, Dungannon Swifts manager John Cunningham confirmed that McCafferty would be joining the Swifts squad, but was unavailable to play until the transfer window opened in January.
