At the start of the final McEnroe was booed by the crowd as he entered Centre Court following his heated exchanges with officials during his semi-final clash with Jimmy Connors.
He is also credited with giving a young John McEnroe a steer in the right direction following numerous reportings of McEnroe to the referee's office.
McEnroe and his running mate, Gerald Simons, were defeated by the Republican incumbents, Thomas Kean (the future Governor) and Philip Kaltenbacher.
