As Vice Provost at Georgia Tech, McMath oversaw student academic services and coordinated campus-wide initiatives to improve the teaching and learning environment for undergraduates, including the design and partial funding of the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons.
Other observatories that UM has operated include the Detroit Observatory (Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1854), the Angell Hall Observatory (Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1927), the McMath-Hulbert Observatory (Lake Angelus, Michigan, 1930), the Portage Lake Observatory (Dexter, Michigan, 1948), and the Peach Mountain Observatory (Dexter, Michigan, 1955).
Robert McMath served as the first president of AURA from 1957 to 1958, and thereafter as chairman of the AURA board.
