The river Meenachil, also known as Kavanar, originates at vagamon in the Western Ghats of Kerala, flows westward through Erattupetta, Palai, Kidangoor, Ettumanoor and Kottayam.

The Ettumanoor - Poonjar State Highway (SH 32) traverses across the Taluk in the easterly direction connecting major centres like Kidangoor, Cherpunkal, Palai, Bharananganam and Erattupetta.
According to legends the Meenachil river originates from the Kamandalu of Gauna Maharshi (Sage Gauna) like the river Kaveri from Agasthya Maharshi's Kamandalu.
It is full of hills and valleys in the middle of which flows the Meenachil river (made famous by Arundhati Roy's novel, The God of Small Things).
