Cussen was elected the President of the Melbourne Cricket Club in 1907, a position he would hold until his death.
He now lives in Melbourne, Australia and has been Assistant Coach/Batting Coach at Melbourne Cricket Club who play in the VIC Premier Competition since 2008.
Known in England as the Surrey Pet, he came to Australia with a sponsored 1861/62 team which consisted of mainly Surrey cricketers, and again in 1864 after which he stayed on as coach of the Melbourne Cricket Club.

He played a single match for the Melbourne Cricket Club against Lord Sheffield's XI during the English team's 1891–92 tour, and later moved to Western Australia, where he was the state's inaugural cricket captain.
The tour was a financial disaster, with the Melbourne Cricket Club, Lillywhite, Shaw and Shrewsbury well out-of-pocket.
In later life Flintoft was Mayor of Prahran, on the Committee of the Melbourne Cricket Club, and on the Board of the Melbourne Football Club, serving as president of the latter for three years.
