After the 1988 Claxton Shield the idea of an Australian Baseball League was floated, with the Waverley Baseball Club being one of the strongest clubs in Victorian Baseball they stepped forward in instigating a team to represent the south-east of Melbourne, and the Waverley Reds were created.
Moorabbin Oval was the home of the Melbourne Reds in the former Australian Baseball League from 1994 to 1999.

The 1997–98 season of the Australian Baseball League saw the Melbourne Reds become the first three-time champions defeating the Gold Coast Cougars 2 games to 0 in the Championship series, in front of a rather small home crowd of 600 at the Melbourne Ballpark.
