The mountain drew media attention in January 2008 when 24-year-old hiker Meredith Emerson went missing from a nearby trail.
Two days later on January 4, 2008, a witness at a Chevron gas station called DeKalb police and stated that "The guy you are looking for is cleaning out his van."
