The traditional crafts performed in Ilija were miller’s trade, smithery and butcher’s trade.
In the 18th century, a custom developed that travelling smiths and apprentices would hammer a nail into the tree trunk; in particular, from 1715 on, travelling journeyman locksmiths.
In 1941 he studied metalsmith at Goldsmith's school in Helsinki, and later at the Georg Jensen silver factory in Copenhagen.
