Midland and South Western Junction Railway

A large ammunition store was established north of Savernake in July 1940; US troops operated it, supplying armaments during the Battle of the Atlantic, and it later became especially important in the build-up for the Invasion of Normandy in 1944.

The LSWR were supportive and seconded Sam Fay, then 35 years old, to the Company; he became General manager and Secretary.


Chiseldon

The Midland and South Western Junction Railway line was constructed in 1881 and ran through the centre of the village until 1961, with a station that linked the village directly to Swindon Town station to the north and Marlborough to the south.
