In 1975, when Allen left Gong, Malherbe along with Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Pierre Moerlen, Miquette Giraudy as Gong recorded 1975's Shamal.

Malherbe and Daevid Allen began collaborating again with Gongmaison in 1989, which eventually began performing and recording again under the name Gong on the studio albums Shapeshifter (1992), Zero to Infinity (2001), and 2032 (2009) after rejoining with various members of the classic line-up, including Gilli Smyth and Mike Howlett, among others.
The album was recorded just prior to Hillage's departure from the band Gong, and many of the players on this album are from that band: Bassist Mike Howlett, drummer Pierre Moerlen, keyboardist Tim Blake and saxophonist Didier Malherbe.
However Sting was dissatisfied with Padovani's technical abilities, paving the way for Andy Summers, whom they met after a brief tour as part of Mike Howlett's band Strontium 90.
The producer for Secret Secrets was Mike Howlett, who had previous success producing for bands such as OMD, China Crisis and Berlin.

The band signed to Siren Records and released the album Madness of It All in 1986, produced by Mike Howlett and engineered by Steve Power, whilst Don Was and Frank Fillipetti produced the title track, and Was solely produced "Cross that Bridge".
More recently, Zorch took part in the three day 2006 Gong Unconvention at the Melkweg, Amsterdam, where Basil Brooks also took part in the Steve Hillage Band set with Hillage, Miquette Giraudy, Mike Howlett, and Chris Taylor.
