Initial fuselage lay-up was performed by Garrison along with engineer Burt Rutan and future private astronaut Mike Melvill, who also performed a fair number of the test flights.
In 1997 Dick Rutan and Mike Melvill flew two Long-EZ aircraft on an around-the-world flight.

For his contribution to the project, Siebold, along with Mike Melvill and Brian Binnie, received the 2004 Iven C. Kincheloe Award presented by the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.
