Smith has been awarded four Honorary Doctorates, from Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts and Massachusetts College of Art.
He taught sculpture at the Minneapolis School of Art (now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design) from 1958 to 1962 and returned to New York until 1963.

She’s received numerous residencies and fellowships, and has instructed various printmaking courses and workshops at the South Bend Museum of Art, Charles Martin Youth Center, High Point, North Carolina Center for Printmaking, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.
During World War I, she studied at the Minneapolis School of Art with her future husband Arnold Blanch, and other notable artists like Harry Gottlieb and Adolf Dehn.
He now resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he is a Professor Emeritus at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
