He started his career in his hometown, where he played for FK Modriča, from where he joined NK Čelik Zenica in 1971, where he won the Mitropa Cup in the following two years with his new club.
Mataja played club football for Borac Banja Luka in the Yugoslav First League, helping the club win the 1987–88 Yugoslav Cup and Mitropa Cup in 1992.
She has won two individual gold medals (in Olbia 2008 and Merlimont 2011), three team gold medals (in 2008, 2010 and 2011) and three bronze team medals (in 2009, 2012 and 2013) in the Mitropa Cup.
