4 unusual facts about Modoc


Ditonic scale

Several ditonic scales were noted about the Modoc and Klamath tribes of the North American West Coast, and are also found in the Great Plains in the rituals of the 1800s Ghost Dance religion.

Hooker Jim

Hooker Jim (1851–1879) was a Modoc warrior who played a pivotal role in the Modoc War.

Modoc Point

The point is named for the Modoc tribe of Native Americans because it was assigned to them when they moved on to the Klamath Reservation, following a treaty in 1864.

Modoc, Arkansas

The town is well-known due its prominent place in the song "Caledonia Mission", written by Robbie Robertson and performed by The Band on their 1968 debut album Music from Big Pink.


Lake City, Modoc County, California

The city is mentioned in the 1995 travel novel California Fault by author Thurston Clarke, when he referenced the area of Modoc County by his great-grandfather's travels in the 1850s in the Fandango Pass.

It also heads southwest across the Modoc Plateau and crosses Interstate 5 near Cottonwood (north of Red Bluff).

Wedding dress

The tribes of Northern California (which include the Klamath, the Modoc and the Yurok) had a traditional bridal dress woven in symbolic colors: white for the east, blue for the south, yellow (orange) for the west; and black for the north.
