Mohammed Daoud Khan (1909–1978), first President of Afghanistan, from 1973, until his assassination in 1978
His ten-year tenure was noted for his foreign policy turn to the Soviet Union, the completion of the Helmand Valley project, which radically improved living conditions in southwestern Afghanistan, and tentative steps towards the emancipation of women.
During the presidency of Mohammed Daoud Khan in the 1970s, Nirkh District was planted with many fruit trees; however, these have since dried up in droughts.
