Matilda became the abbess of the Abbey Church of Notre-Dame, Montivilliers, and for that reason is best known as Maud of Montivilliers.
The church became a parish church no later than 1067, because it is known that Duke William II of Normandy granted half the tithes of the church to the Abbey of Montivilliers in Upper Normandy.
He received his classical education in Rouen, and was also taught at the Petites écoles de Port-Royal, entered the magistracy and became judge at Montivilliers, near Le Havre.
