He was born in London, the son of Major-General Sir Henry Trotter and Lady Trotter, who maintained an estate at Mortonhall, Midlothian.
It is perhaps best known for its crematorium, designed by Sir Basil Spence, which is considered to be an outstanding example of Scottish modern architecture.
