While Gray-bellies have been recorded only in the Kitanglad Mountains, the Mindanao is considered to be endemic to the mountains of the island of Mindanao and has been recorded from Mount Apo and Mount Malindang as well as from Mount Kitanglad.
The species was first described scientifically by Ross H. Arnett, Jr. in 1950, and is named after Mount Apo.

Originally known from Mount Apo near Davao City and Mount Pasian near Bislig, it has since been discovered on a number of peaks throughout Mindanao.
