Near the town of Glendale the Muddy River collects the flow from the Meadow Valley Wash, forming the principal drainage system for southeastern Nevada.

In 1686 a community of farmers to the west of Boston separated itself into a semi-autonomous village called Muddy River.
In 1868 Wilford Woodruff appointed Claridge to preside over the Latter Day Saints living along the Muddy River in what is now Nevada but was then in Utah Territory.
