It is part of the defence line of Muiden, that is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, the UNESCO World Heritage site that consists of a set of forts around the city of Amsterdam.
In 1165 a canal was dug which connected the city of Utrecht with the river Vecht, and Utrecht became a very important town with a sea harbour (the present Muiden harbour) before Amsterdam was founded.
In front of the railway station is a small bus station with services to neighbouring towns and villages such as Muiden, Muiderberg, and Nigtevecht, and to Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA railway station.
