The temple is located in Munneswaram, a village with mixed Sinhala and Tamil population situated in the historic Demala Pattuva ("Tamil division") region in the Puttalam District.
Even today, Rodi women travel from villages in the northwest province to the famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva at Munneswaram, near Chilaw, for the annual festival during July and August.
