The battle took place in and near the village of Murowana Oszmianka in Generalbezirk Litauen Reichskommissariat Ostland (modern Muravanaya Ashmyanka, Belarus, former Murowana Oszmianka, Second Polish Republic).
During World War II (around May 1944) the village was the site of a battle between anti-Nazi Polish resistance and Nazi Lithuanian auxiliary Local Lithuanian Detachment.
Tributary of Neris (Wilia), it has a length of 104 km, starting from the village of Muravanaya Ashmyanka and passing through the town of Ashmyany (Oszmiana).
