In 1874 he moved to Crieff and later to Muthill, painting rustic genre scenes and later increasingly impressionistic landscapes which made his reputation.
Her family came from Muthill and Braco in Strathearn and this also attributed to local feeling against her as an outsider.
Born at Muthill, Perthshire, he was the eldest son of Dr William Dow (1765-1844), Brewmaster, and Anne Mason.
