Baird has worked with ESPN, Outdoor Life Network, Versus and Television New Zealand as an expert commentator for shows about sailboat racing.
The show was canceled in 2004 after ESPN chose not to rival the bid to broadcast NHL games, which were won by OLN (now NBC Sports Network).
The network obtained the National Hockey League rights from ESPN in 1988 by offering the NHL almost triple the amount of money that ESPN was offering (a move not unlike the 2005 NHL rights grab by Comcast/OLN over ESPN).
His primary responsibilities are for TNT's NASCAR coverage, a position he has held since 2001, and NBC Sports Network's IndyCar Series coverage, which he has been a part of since NBC was bought by Comcast in 2010.
Roll continues to enjoy riding road and mountain bicycles for recreation, and is a member of the veteran cable television broadcasting team (along with Phil Liggett, MBE and Paul Sherwen) who serve as road cycling expert-commentators for the NBC Sports Network cable network's coverage of the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Paris–Roubaix, Tour of California, and other international cycling road races.
