Battaglia would eventually qualify for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships -and USA Track and Field Championships- in both the heptathlon and javelin throw.
She took her skills to Louisiana State University, where she became the first woman to win the NCAA Championships 200 metres back to back, both indoors and outdoors.
She took fourth in the 5000 m NCAA regionals with a personal best of 15:56.96 and finished in fifth at the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship, gaining her second All-American honours of the season.

May 12: Coach Auriemma, along with Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the Duke men's basketball program, were the recipients of the "Winged Foot Award" presented annually (since 1996) to the coaches of the Men's and Women's NCAA Division I Basketball Championship.
While at UConn she played in every game since her sophomore season (144) breaking the UConn record for all-time games played (138) by Carla Berube (since broken by Ashley Battle), and helped lead her team, known as the Huskies, to two NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championships in 2000 and 2002.
She had won the 60 metres hurdles at the 2005 and 2006 NCAA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Atkins ran track for the Auburn Tigers where in 2009 she took first place at the NCAA Women's Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 400 meter dash and was Southeastern Conference champion in the same event.
Janson repeated the ACC double in 2003 and took her first major college title at the NCAA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship.
She also trained Claire Donahue, silver medalist in the 100 m butterfly at the 2011 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, who later became a sixth-place finalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Basketball was one of twelve women's sports added to the NCAA championship program for the 1981-82 school year, as the NCAA engaged in battle with the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women for sole governance of women's collegiate sports.

The AIAW also held a basketball tournament in 1982, but most of the top teams, including defending AIAW champion Louisiana Tech, decided to participate in the NCAA tournament.
The tournament was held at the University of Michigan's Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan with automatic bids from the MPSF (Stanford), CWPA (Indiana), Big West (UCI), MAAC (Iona), WWPA (UCSD) and SCIAC (Redlands).
