Haroon had previously served as a full-time employee in Pakistan International Airlines as a sales assistant while studying at NED University of Engineering and Technology where he pursed a BS degree in civil engineering.

He was also the president of the Karachi Division from 1996 to 2000, vice-president of PTI Sindh from 2000 to 2001 and general secretary of PTI Sindh from 2001 to 2003 of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Apart from Khan he is the one of only two of the founding fathers who are still part of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
