Their pre-World War I population area was six times larger than that of present-day Armenia, including the eastern regions of Turkey, northern part of Iran, southern part of Georgia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Nakhichevan regions of Azerbaijan.
It lies in the south-east of the country, bordering the Nakhichevan exclave of Azerbaijan in the west and the Azerbaijan in the east.
Yeraskh is the last town in Armenia at the border with Nakhichevan on what used to be the main road and rail connections between Nakhichevan and Azerbaijan proper.
