One of the proposals for the Otago Central Railway was to build a line from Oamaru to Naseby, and in 1877 an invitation was extended to the Waimate County Council to partake in a plan to connect Waimate to the Oamaru-Naseby line in either Duntroon or Livingstone and thus establish a through route from Central Otago to Canterbury.

Henry Cuttance, born in Melcombe Regis, Dorset, was son of Sir Roger Cuttance, Edward Montagu’s flag captain in the Naseby, in 1660.
After the outbreak of the Civil War, Rushworth as an "embedded journalist" followed the battles of Edge Hill (1642), Newbury (1643-1644), Marston Moor (1644) and Naseby (1645).
During the 1860s the region was one of the sites of the Central Otago goldrush, and relics from that era can still be seen around the towns of Kyeburn, Naseby, and St. Bathans.
Thornby Hall is located off Naseby road and is 17th century, with 19th and 20th century additions, in the Tudor style.
