Born in Port of Spain, McFarlane attended Malick Secondary Comprehensive School in his native Trinidad, and briefly attended Trinity College, before moving to the United States in 1995 to attend Nassau Community College.

In the next few years, under his leadership the union organized locals at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Nassau Community College and Westchester Community College.
Decommissioned in 1961, Mitchel Field became a multi-use complex that is home to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Nassau Coliseum, Mitchel Athletic Complex, Nassau Community College, and Hofstra University.
